Looking Back: May to July 2024

Let’s revisit the last forecast period to explore actual rainfall and temperature occurrences.

Here’s what occurred in May-June-July 2024:

Rainfall
  • The transition into the wet season was wetter than usual in the Bahamas, most of the Greater Antilles Islands (except Puerto Rico), as well as in southernmost parts of Guyana and Suriname.
  • No areas were marked by severe (or worse) short-term drought.
  • Severe (or worse) long term drought was observed by the end of August in southwest Belize, southern French Guiana, parts of northern Guyana, southernmost Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Temperature
  • The middle portion of the Heat Season was 0.5-2ºC warmer than usual except eastern Jamaica where slight negative anomalies were recorded.
  • At least 10 countries broke a national record for highest average temperature for May-June-July, with several locations outside those countries breaking local records.
